10 interesting facts about: Linked-In

July 12th, 2010    Posted in General Blog

Linked-In is technically a social network, but not what people really think of when most people think of social media networks… at least not me. I believe that most people think of a play to goof off online while reconnecting with friends. And while Linked-In will allow you to connect with old and current business colleagues, it’s not so mcuh used for gaming or being truly social as much as it is for networking. So even thought you can communicate back and forth using this great online tool, which I use myself, I’d call this more online business networking than I would call in online social networking.

So, without further wait, here are the 10 interesting facts about Linked-In:

  1. Having been created on May 5 2003, Linked-in is older than Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.
  2. There are more than 70 million users worldwide.
  3. Members of LinkedIn come from more than 200 countries from every continent.
  4. LinkedIn is available in six native languages – English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
  5. 80% of companies use LinkedIn as a recruitment tool.
  6. A new member joins LinkedIn every second.
  7. LinkedIn receives almost 12 million unique visitors per day.
  8. Executives from all Fortune 500 companies are on LinkedIn.
  9. Recruiters account for 1-in-20 LinkedIn profiles.

And I thought this one very interesting:

10. Oracle’s Chief Financial Officer, Jeff Epstein, was headhunted for the position via his LinkedIn profile.

10 interesting facts about: YouTube

July 6th, 2010    Posted in General Blog

Video social network is probably one of the most important types of social media is the use of videos online. While I would say that Facebook is used more often than Youtube, I would say that once people go over to youtube.com, they stay there longer than they would at YouTube…. These are only my thoughts from my research on who long people spend on YouTube in a given session, so don’t take it as absolute fact.

But here are some interesting fact, taken from statistics of the YouTube press center.

  1. The very first video uploaded was called “Me at the Zoo,” on 23rd April 2005.
  2. By June 2006, more than 65,000 videos were being uploaded every day
  3. YouTube receives more than 2 billion viewers per day.
  4. Every minute, 24 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube.
  5. The U.S. accounts for 70% of YouTube users.
  6. Over half of YouTube’s users are under 20 years old.
  7. You would need to live for around 1,000 years to watch all the videos currently on YouTube.
  8. YouTube is available in 19 countries and 12 languages.
  9. Music videos account for 20% of uploads.

And I thought this one very interesting:

10. YouTube uses the same amount of bandwidth as the entire Internet used in 2000.

‘Larry King Live!’ Comes to an end

June 30th, 2010    Posted in General Blog, Video Clips

Today, Larry King told the world he will be ending his long-running CNN show, Larry King Live.

“It’s time to hang up the nightly suspenders,” the famous host announced.

If I should say anything, they were more than just nightly suspenders, but very, very mighty suspenders indeed. Larry King Live holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-running show with the same host in the same time slot; in fact, it’s been a regular feature on the air for 25 years. It was also the first-ever worldwide phone-in TV talk show. King himself has been in professional broadcasting for 53 years, during which time he has conducted more than 40,000 interviews with celebrities, politicians, topical experts and others.

Understandably, news about King’s pulling the plug on his show created a significant hiccup in the social web. Let’s take a look at the topic as it trended on Twitter, Google and elsewhere.

First, here is a YouTube video showing King’s announcement:

Larry is a great interviewer and in his announcement, he said “I’ll still be a part of the CNN family, hosting several Larry King specials on major national and international subjects… With this chapter closing I’m looking forward to the future and what my next chapter will bring, but for now it’s time to hang up my nightly suspenders.”
