10 years ago, most people on the internet did n ot know what a “blog” was — and some still don’t. If you are reading this on joshlovesjen.com, then you are reading a blog — da-da-dum!…
Technorati.com is the leading source, next to Google in my opinion, for indexing blogs and blogs posts around the web. In their own words, “The leading blog search engine, Technorati.com indexes millions of blog posts in real time and surfaces them in seconds. The site has become the definitive source for the top stories, opinions, photos and videos emerging across news, entertainment, technology, lifestyle, sports, politics and business. Technorati.com tracks not only the authority and influence of blogs, but also the most comprehensive and current index of who and what is most popular in the Blogosphere.”
Taken from Technorati’s State of the Blogosphere 2009, here are 10 facts that you might not have known about the online culture of blogging:
- 77% of Internet users read blogs.
- There are currently 133 million blogs listed on leading blog directory Technorati.
- 60% of bloggers are between the ages 18-44.
- One in five bloggers update their blogs daily.
- Not so surprising to me: Two thirds of bloggers are male.
- Corporate blogging accounts for 14% of blogs.
- 15% of bloggers spend 10 hours a week blogging.
- More than half of all bloggers are married and/or parents.
- More than 50% of bloggers have more than one blog.
- Bloggers use an average of five different social sites to drive traffic to their blog.

Linked-In is technically a social network, but not what people really think of when most people think of social media networks… at least not me. I believe that most people think of a play to goof off online while reconnecting with friends. And while Linked-In will allow you to connect with old and current business colleagues, it’s not so mcuh used for gaming or being truly social as much as it is for networking. So even thought you can communicate back and forth using this great online tool, which I use myself, I’d call this more online business networking than I would call in online social networking.
So, without further wait, here are the 10 interesting facts about Linked-In:
- Having been created on May 5 2003, Linked-in is older than Facebook, Twitter and Youtube.
- There are more than 70 million users worldwide.
- Members of LinkedIn come from more than 200 countries from every continent.
- LinkedIn is available in six native languages – English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.
- 80% of companies use LinkedIn as a recruitment tool.
- A new member joins LinkedIn every second.
- LinkedIn receives almost 12 million unique visitors per day.
- Executives from all Fortune 500 companies are on LinkedIn.
- Recruiters account for 1-in-20 LinkedIn profiles.
And I thought this one very interesting:
10. Oracle’s Chief Financial Officer, Jeff Epstein, was headhunted for the position via his LinkedIn profile.

Video social network is probably one of the most important types of social media is the use of videos online. While I would say that Facebook is used more often than Youtube, I would say that once people go over to youtube.com, they stay there longer than they would at YouTube…. These are only my thoughts from my research on who long people spend on YouTube in a given session, so don’t take it as absolute fact.
But here are some interesting fact, taken from statistics of the YouTube press center.
- The very first video uploaded was called “Me at the Zoo,” on 23rd April 2005.
- By June 2006, more than 65,000 videos were being uploaded every day
- YouTube receives more than 2 billion viewers per day.
- Every minute, 24 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube.
- The U.S. accounts for 70% of YouTube users.
- Over half of YouTube’s users are under 20 years old.
- You would need to live for around 1,000 years to watch all the videos currently on YouTube.
- YouTube is available in 19 countries and 12 languages.
- Music videos account for 20% of uploads.
And I thought this one very interesting:
10. YouTube uses the same amount of bandwidth as the entire Internet used in 2000.
